The Many sides of Tom Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Many sides of Tom - Essay Example Tom longs for controversy. The demands of Amanda and the incessant needs of Laura were not enough for Tom. He treasured the edges of conflict that his father had inherited to him. Tom, ever in search of new horizons, looks beyond his dull household members and finds that his family arrangements fall short of his own social expectations. He pronounces, "Here there was only shouting and confusion and labor disturbances, sometimes violent, in otherwise peaceful cities..." (11). With an emphasis on "only", Tom had read the news from Europe and was not above strapping his nuclear family with his own expectations. In many ways, Tom views himself as a savior, and in doing so tries vainly to pass his troubled present off as some superior placement from the past. The dominating mother can know nothing of his complicated life, and his poor, dimwitted sister will never be able to taste the love for life that he has. As if rising above his own surroundings he tells Amanda, "Mother, Laura lives in a world of little glass animals. She plays old phonograph records - and that's about all" (39).

Abnormal Earnings and Economic Value Added Research Proposal - 1
Abnormal Earnings and Economic Value Added - Research Proposal Example When a company reports lower earnings in its financial statements than investor-anticipated earnings, it can induce the stock prices to drop significantly. Whereas in case if a company reports more earnings than anticipated by the investors, it boosts up the company's stock prices. This motivates the managers to report discretionary results or earnings so as to live up to the expectations of the shareholders and investors leading to earnings manipulation. The companies report abnormal earnings that misrepresent their financial position and to artificially evaluate the stock. Another metric used to gauge a company's performance and position is known as Economic value added that compares earnings with the cost of capital. Stewart (1991) has presented several arguments that go in favor of using economic value added concept for valuation purpose. The major reason behind using the economic value added as a basis for stock valuation is to analyze the worth a company returns to its shareholders as a reward for their risk and investment. Stewart (1991) shows that the economic value added is calculated by subtracting the cost of capital from the after-tax profit of a company. ... plies that a company should be able to drive that many returns to the shareholders, as they would otherwise get out of another investment opportunity. If the company fails to provide that value, it implies that it actually incurring the loss and is unable to provide sufficient returns to the shareholders. Therefore, it can be said that the ability of a company to procure returns for its shareholders greater than the capital costs can eventually increase or decrease its value. The studies conducted by researchers Stewart (1991), and Lehn and Makhija (1996) prove that economic value added concept bears a strong relationship with company's stock and therefore, has a great capability to influence its stock value. It is, however, to be noted that Topkis (1996) shows that economic value added could only be used as a basis for valuation of a company's future share price and cash flow expectations, but it can not be used to value current stock prices. .

Compare Devices Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Compare Devices - Essay Example This paper will compare Shakespeareââ¬â¢s poem titled, ââ¬Å"Shall I compare thee to a summerââ¬â¢s day?â⬠and Marvellââ¬â¢s poem titled, ââ¬Å"To his coy mistressâ⬠. Marvellââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"To his coy mistressâ⬠depicts a male speaker addressing his mistress. The speaker speaks in reference to how much time he will spend loving the mistress and uses different ideas linked to time to convince the mistress that the relationship needs a deeper level of commitment. In a bid to achieve this purpose, Marvell made use of numerous devices to place emphasis on his theme. From the title of the poem, one can begin to understand the male speaker and the words that he utters to his mistress. Evidently, the term used ââ¬Å"coyâ⬠implies that the mistress is reserved explaining why the speaker makes efforts to convince her. He makes use of imagery such as ââ¬Å"vegetable loveâ⬠to place emphasis on the kind of love he had for the mistress. This type of imagery brings about the idea that his love was fresh and blossoming and with a great capacity to grow. Moreover, he also uses an additional imagery ââ¬Å"Times winged chariotâ⬠(Marv ell). In a real sense, time does not have a chariot to signal people. However, Marvell used this imagery to emphasize his fear that time would pass by too soon, leaving them without an opportunity for their love. On the other hand, Shakespeare wrote his highly influential poem ââ¬Å"Shall I compare thee to summerââ¬â¢s dayâ⬠which also depicts a male speaker addressing a woman. In this poem, the speaker places emphasis on the beauty and youth of the loved woman. Just like Marvell, Shakespeare was an expert in the use of imagery which he relied on in the development of the theme of love and praise to the woman. In references to the womanââ¬â¢s youth, he says, ââ¬Å"But thy eternal summer shall not fadeâ⬠(Shakespeare). This powerful imagery is used to illustrate the womanââ¬â¢s beauty and youth which are not subject to fading for

These activities reflect that some Americans desire to make the natives enjoy those amenities which were once kept reserved for the American people. However, the Native Americans are increasingly falling prey to problems of cultural relativi ty and ethnocentrism as reflected by the attitudes of some fellow Americans. Paul Farmer Essay Example for Free
Paul Farmer Essay How far will one man go to achieve the impossible? How far can one man go to reach his goal? The country of Haiti is one of the most under developed countries in the world, but one doctor, Paul Farmer, is determined to help cure this country. No matter what the costs, Paul Farmer is willing to do whatever it takes to help those in need. A doctor who has graduated from Harvard, is also the founder of Partners in Health, and is also a teacher at Harvard. In the book Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder, Kidder shows the perseverance, determination, and courage of Paul Farmer and how he tries to help cure an under developed country and how he treats his patients. Paul Farmer isnââ¬â¢t like any other doctor. He treats his patients with more care than an average doctor. In chapter 2 of Mountains Beyond Mountains, Paul Farmer is seen with a patient in Boston who is HIV positive. The patient, named Joe, doesnââ¬â¢t eat properly and doesnââ¬â¢t take his medication and is also a drug addict. Though Joe doesnââ¬â¢t follow the protocol of being healthy, Paul Farmer insists that he treats Joe with respect and care. The patient only wants to drink and wants somebody to take care of him. Farmer took the patient to a homeless shelter. During Christmas time, Farmer bought Joe a six pack of beer for Christmas as a gift. On a message board at the hospital, read ââ¬Å" OUT- cold, their drugs, ? gal. vodka, IN- warm, our drugs, 6 pack bud. â⬠(pg. 15) At the bottom of that message also read ââ¬Å"Why do I know Paul Farmer wrote this? (Pg. 5) This shows how Dokte Paul Farmer cares for his patients and how the other doctors are used to his generosity with their patients. Not many doctors would go to the extreme in taking care of one patient, or bending the rules to suit a patientââ¬â¢s needs. This act of kindness shows how much Paul Farmer cares about his patients and the people of Haiti. Paul Farmer treats everybody equally, whether theyââ¬â¢d be rich or poor. The US Army is in Haiti to reinstate the countryââ¬â¢s democratically elected government and to take away the power of the Junta that is ruling the country of Haiti with cruelty. In chapter 1, Paul Farmer despises how Captain Carroll and his men release Nerva Juste, a sheriff who is accused of beheading the assistant mayor of Mirebalais. Because there wasnââ¬â¢t any hard evidence of Nerva killing the assistant mayor, the US army had to let him go. Paul Farmer says to Captain Carroll, ââ¬Å"Two clear sides existed in Haiti, the forces of repression and the Haitian poor, the vast majorityâ⬠¦it still seems fuzzy which side the American soldiers are onâ⬠(pg. 15). This shows that Farmer is defending the poor Haitians
